Five Major Factors Affecting Learner Dropout from Online and Blended Courses

E-learning in higher education in the form of online and blended courses is firmly established in many educational institutions and appears to be gaining ground around the world. While the advantages associated with this form of course delivery are numerous, it relies heavily on learner autonomy and self-directness: characteristics not all learners have or can sustain even with appropriate training. Indeed, some studies suggest that 50-70 per cent of learners fail to complete online courses (Lehman & Conceição, 2014). In light of these suggestions, it is useful to identify and consider the factors that affect a learner’s decision to drop out of a course or programme of study, especially from institutions offering online and blended courses.

What are the teacher characteristics that are deemed important by SIM University students?

In this issue, I would like to provide a glimpse from SIM university learners’ perspective of what they might expect from instructors in terms of instruction. The findings came from a study conducted by TLC, which used a component of the student evaluation exercise at SIM University over three semesters from 2011 to 2012.
