What's New in Adult Learning?

Globalisation has fostered a powerful trend of particular importance to the field of adult and higher education by way of the emergence of lifelong learning. This situation has in turn placed a high premium on educational institutions to ensure that they offer quality and relevant education to their adult learners. This presentation begins with acknowledging the forces affecting adult learning such as globalisation and technology, and reviews the three foundational theories of adult learning – andragogy, self-directed learning and transformative learning. Professor Emeritus Sharan Merriam will also briefly introduce some new ideas about adult learning and conclude with what educators need to attend to in order to prepare learners for the demands of today's world.
