Synopsis:
As UniSIM progressively moves its courses and course materials online what are some of the considerations instructors need to take into account where copyright and intellectual property rights are concerned? What are some features of the Copyright Act in Singapore that is applicable to the UniSIM context? How do we know if the links we're providing to online materials or web sites are permissible? What about publisher materials, sound recordings, video recordings, performances? These are issues participants will grapple with during the workshop, where we will discuss some examples drawn from the UniSIM context and look at some standard guidelines to follow when doing work for UniSIM.

About the Speaker:
Assoc Prof Darren Koh Ngiap Thiam is currently the Head for the Master of Taxation programme at SIM University with a keen interest in international taxation, particularly in the field of transfer pricing and the tax efficient supply-chain structuring. He obtained his Bachelor of Law degree at the University of Buckingham in the United Kingdom, graduating top of his class winning the Maxwell Law Prize for his year. He later obtained his Master of Laws from the University of London (awarded with Merit).

Besides being a member of the Bar of England and Wales, Darren is also a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, the Chartered Institute of Taxation (United Kingdom) and the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore. Darren's interest in international tax is reflected in his comprehensive career starting with PricewaterhouseCoopers in London and later at KPMG in Hong Kong before he moved to the industry with Procter & Gamble. He also spent two years with a branch of the United Nations Security Council known as the United Nations Compensation Commission, advising Commissioners on the verification and valuation of war reparation claims filed against Iraq after the first Gulf War.

He returned to Procter & Gamble after his stint at the UN, and later left Procter & Gamble as Associate Director for the ASEAN/Australasia/India region to pursue a career in academia. His career to date has taken him around the world from London to Hong Kong, Kobe, Geneva, Singapore, Cincinnati, Ohio and back again to Singapore.

His career gave him a lot of exposure to the world of intellectual property, and his interest in the field of copyright has been piqued by the challenges faced in his day to day work in academia.

In 2012, Teaching & Learning Centre piloted the Associate Faculty Champion initiative with two associates – Ms Shireen Chitran (HDSS) and Dr Kanjula Spandana (SBIZ).

The aim of this initiative is to encourage associates to explore innovative teaching methods and learning activities that can help enhance their students’ learning and required skills in the particular discipline, and to share and mentor other associates who may be interested in similarly adopting these practices in their courses.

Shireen and Spandana each conducted a mini-research project within the courses they were teaching in which they methodically documented and analysed evidence of their students’ learning.

For her project, Shireen used a multi-pronged approach to inculcating critical thinking skills among her social work students enrolled in the practice skills course, SWK291 Working with Individuals and Families. Spandana explored the use of advanced organizers in the form of mind-maps as a means for students to collaboratively consolidate their knowledge and to encourage more in-depth understanding in the introductory course, BUS101e Management.

Both Shireen and Spandana will be presenting their projects and findings during a sharing session on October 25, 5.30 pm to 7.00 pm. Hope to see you there!
