Self-Directed Learning

Self-Directed Learning

The resources below focus on the skills you need to be being a strategic self-directed learner. As a strategic self-directed learner, you take active control of your learning by setting goals, utilising relevant skills, monitoring and evaluating your progress in the most efficient manner.

This series of resources is produced to create awareness of, and/or impart skills (Study Skills and Self-Regulation Skills) that will make you in a strategic self-directed learner.

Study skills are practical strategies used to acquire, retain and demonstrate the knowledge you’ve learnt in your courses. These skills include reading, listening, presentation, memorisation, problem-solving, etc. Self-regulation skills help to monitor and motivate the effective and efficient use of study skills. These skills include goal setting, time management, stress management, procrastination management, etc.

Study skills and self-regulation skills are essential sets of skills that reinforce each other. Self-regulation skills by itself are insufficient in ensuring that the learner acquires, retains and is able to clearly demonstrate his or her knowledge. Similarly, study skills alone cannot be employed effectively, meaningfully and efficiently without self-regulation skills that help keep you on track with regard the tasks you’ve set out to do.

Every learner is unique in the way s/he learns. Some of you may not need these skills at all as you are already effective self-directed learners with your own repertoire of study and self-regulation skills. On the other hand, some of you may find some of the skills discussed below useful.

We have carefully chosen to share only the skills that are practical and which empirical studies have shown to be essential for academic success at the undergraduate level. These resources are all aimed at helping you do well in your studies at SUSS.

We hope you’ll find the resources we’ve put together for you useful!
